The Paroz Show

Finale Spectacular

By Alex

On the Paroz show we shared more than a few laughs. It started when Chill went remote when Covid started. We tuned in at 7pm each session to see the lovable goofball and have a fun time with each other. Now, after 3 and a half years, the Paroz show reached its conclusion with an amazing finale hosted in the Chill building with a live audience. I had the pleasure of being there, and quite a show it was. The set design was fantastic, with lighting and tinsel. The tinsel fell down several times during the show, but I can’t fault the organisers for that. Evidently the force of gravity was stronger than the adhesive that came with the tinsel. We waited with anticipation for the man himself to appear. He came out with much grandiose and greeted everyone in the live audience, as well as those that joined on zoom.

After this, he displayed some statistics on the screen (and on the back of his shirt). There were 155 episodes total over 234 hours. 30 special guests appeared, 7 movie nights were hosted, and 1 haircut was administered. One of those statistics was fairly unflattering for myself. Highlights of the show were returning appearances of beloved and quirky characters that had graced our zoom sessions with their charm. This being Paroz’s grandfather, the zen and mystical Leafwater, and the hip and radical cockney musical artist DJ Curls. After a tubular jam session that George, Eve, Beth, and I participated in, DJ Curls dropped a bombshell and revealed he was Paroz the whole time! I asked him if this meant that he did indeed play Crash Twinsanity (DJ Curls apparently played the game as a “wee lad”). I also asked Paroz if he was Leafwater as well. He said no, but I’m convinced they are the same person, and one day, I will prove it.

The Paroz Show

Finale Spectacular

Continued

Dylan was a joy to watch, and the improvisation needed on his part, due to his performing partner not being able to make it, was commendable. One of the last things that happened in the night was a lip sync battle between Helen and Anthony. We were the judges, and the winner was chosen based on who received the most applause (kind of like that show “The Slammer” if you’ve heard of it.). Helen performed an heartfelt lip sync of “Ain't No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye, but Anthony stole the show with his interpretation of “Crumble” by Lorraine Bowen, that one contestant on Britain's Got Talent. Like Lorraine Bowen’s performance, it paid off, earning Anthony a trophy (which he has yet to receive as of the time of writing). Helen’s attempt was admirable, but she was doomed to fail the moment she chose to compete against the one with a background in entertainment.

It’s sad to see this show go. It was something I’ve never experienced before, and something I’ll likely never experience since. However, all good things must come to an end, and so I suppose it was time to bid farewell to this project of our man Paroz. Paroz, of course, will still be here at Chill, and it’s wonderful seeing him. There will be many more unforgettable experiences that will be had in our Chill family. However, we will always remember the times we’d get on Zoom at the same time (not me, because i was late, remember), and just enjoy each other’s company. So with that, I bid farewell to the Paroz show.

Armatopia

Johnny Marr

Teleman Remix

The release of Johnny Marr’s synth soaked single ‘Armatopia’ in 2019 was shortly followed by this remix by Peter Cattermoul of dance-rock trio Teleman. Isolated vocals lead into an energetic electronic effort that holds up even without the presence of Johnny’s standout

guitar riff.

Leave a Trace

Chvrches

Goldroom Remix

This mix of Scottish synth-pop stars Chvrches’ track from their second album Every Open Eye starts simple, with Lauren Mayberry’s instantly recognisable voice soon joined by a psychedelic beat that builds and builds until exploding into a thumping, all-encompassing experience. Just the song for when all you want to do is to stick your headphones on and let the music take over.

Pretty Boy

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Robert Smith Remix

The debut single from the former Oasis icon Noel Gallagher’s latest solo effort was handed over to the God of Goth for a reimagining. Opening with acoustic guitar and reverb drenched vocals, this remix from Robert Smith, frontman of legendary new wave band The Cure, also benefits from the addition of an extra guitar solo. Despite the dreamy atmosphere being a departure from the original track, both mixes hit all the right notes.

Haiku

HAIKU

Haiku are not long.

But they can be tough to write.

With practice, it’s fun!

A haiku is a short, unrhymed poem that adheres to a specific three-line, seventeen-syllable format. The form originated in Japan, but today people across the globe read and write haiku in many different languages. Because of different languages’ unique syllabic and grammatical structures, haiku have slightly different formats from language to language.

Dice for playing tabletop game

By Ben & Zylwesta

One day, in the early 1970’s, two wives were getting somewhat suspicious of their husbands’ basement activities, and so they went down to investigate. What they saw was their husbands, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, planning, organising, creating, and playing the game that would become the global phenomenon…

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS!

First published in 1974 by Gygax’s company, Tactical Studies Rules (TSR), D&D was the first in a genre known as Tabletop role-playing games, or RPG for short, with a brilliant combination of storytelling, strategy, and fantasy.

D&D has been through many updates and changes, it really took off in the 1980’s, and was purchased by Wizards of the Coast (WotC) in 1997, when TSR was facing financial challenges. In 2000 WotC released the third edition of D&D, which introduced the now synonymous D20 system.

In 2008, mixed reactions met the release of the fourth edition, which focused on streamlining rules and tactical combat. It was in 2014 when WotC released what would be widely praised and help bring about a resurgence to D&D’s popularity. This was the fifth edition, or D&D 5E, which emphasised simplicity, flexibility, and a return to the game’s roots.

Throughout its history, D&D has expanded its universe, with various different campaigns, stories, locations, characters, monsters, races, and classes for the players to play as or interact with. And this doesn’t include the relative ease of what is called “homebrew” in which the community can create their own classes, locations, races, and campaigns which they can share with others, which one of the modern methods of sharing is a site called D&D Beyond.

With a player base of roughly 50 million people worldwide, D&D is a game that brings people together and can help form friendships that can last a lifetime. You can be whoever you want to be in D&D, the only limits are your imagination. As long as you have Pen, paper, and a set of dice, you can play D&D.

recommendations

Manga eyes looking with paint dripping from her face. Drawing of black and white anime girl peeps out

By Lachlan

Looking for an anime to watch or manga/ light novels to read?

Overwhelmed by the many choices? I’ll give you some of my picks.

Section 1-Romance

1-Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa

Asahi Kuromine cannot keep secrets and he is head over heels for one of his own classmates, Youko Shiragami, however, he happens to learn her secret, one that, if exposed, would force her to leave school as due to the promise she made with her dad and now he is determined to make sure her true nature is never discovered.

I recommend to read the manga as it is complete and the anime does not show what happens at the end.

2-Tonikawa-Over the moon for you.

Growing up, the main male lead was made fun of because of his name, which happened to be Nasa Yuzaki. To this end, he studied hard to enter a good college and get amazing grades, which all changed when he was nearly run over by a truck and was saved by a girl, who he finds cute. After she calls an ambulance, she leaves, however, this isn’t enough to stop Nasa as he pursues her to a bus stop, still bloody and asks her to go out with him. She responds-“I will, if you marry me.”

I recommend both the manga and anime as they are both excellent.

Section 2-Isekai

1-Mushoku Tensei

A NEET (Shut-in) is killed by a truck and is reborn as Rudues Greyrat, who goes on a journey in order to make himself better and help the people he meets along the way.

2-Re:zero

Natsuki Subaru is walking along when he suddenly finds himself in an alternate world. He comes across some bandits, but is saved by a half-elf woman who calls herself “Satella”. When she loses something important to her, Subaru swears to find it, though he is killed, but he comes back to a certain point and comes across the half-elf woman again and calls out to her. This is when he learns a horrifying truth-although he can know what happens due to his ability, the people involved will never know what will happen.

Section 3-Horror

Dark Gathering.

This story is about a high schooler trying to reconnect with society after he became a shut-in, due to the fact that he is a spirit magnet. Step one is to help his childhood friend’s cousin with tutoring. This cousin also happens to be a spirit magnet, but rather than running away from them, she wants to confront them in order to find her mother.

Section 4-Action

1-One Piece

One Piece is a story about a pirate named Monkey D. Luffy who wants to be King of the pirates. He doesn’t want the treasure for personal gain, or the reputation. He just wants to have a fun journey and views being the pirate king as the most free person of all. One other thing about him is that rather than change how he acts and behaves, he changes the others around him and he’s a really kind person to those who are friendly in return. Combined with Oda-sensei’s masterclass writing and foreshadowing, there’s a reason why this manga is popular.

I personally recommend reading the manga as you can easily avoid the filler.

2-Welcome to Demon school, Iruma-kun!

This is the story of a human named Suzuki Iruma, who, at fourteen years old, has been raised by terrible parents as they sold him to a demon who was…kind? And a school principal? This demon, named Sullivan, who always wanted a grandson, adopts him and sends him to Babyls, the school he is the principal of. Now, Iruma must try to keep a low profile in order to survive.

I recommend to read the manga.

Section 5-Mystery

1-Gosick

Set in a small country in Europe named Sauville, Kujou Kazuya is the third son of a Japanese Imperial soldier and is ostracized by his peers at Saint Marguerite Academy because of legend known as the “The student that comes in Spring brings death with him” resulted in him becoming called the “Dark reaper.” On a certain day, he goes up a tower and meets this girl called Victorique De Blois, a doll like detective with blond hair. They start off on the wrong foot, but they eventually grow to like each other, with him becoming protective and caring of her.

I recommend watching the anime”

Chill- Couch Review

By Eve

I have had the privilege of being a part of Chill for the past three years.

During my time here, I have had the opportunity to experience sitting on various couches at Chill, which has allowed me to provide a comprehensive overview of what one can expect from them.

The Leather Dream

This brown leather couch, positioned in the entryway of Chill, exudes a strong and resilient presence. Its soft leather has been gently worn over the years by countless individuals, who have sat on it before and after their sessions, bringing a unique character to the piece. The patina that adorns the leather is a visual testament to its durability and longevity. It is this distinctive characteristic that I find most enjoyable and intriguing about this couch. The three-seater couch makes for excellent group discussions as well as more one-on-one interactions.

The cosy escape

Now, let us move on to the cosy retreat known as Studio 3. This space serves as the break room for artistic pursuits and robotic programs at Chill. The gray couch seamlessly aligns itself against the wall, creating an inviting space for conversation. The comfort provided by the grey fabric makes this couch an ideal spot to spend time engaging in meaningful discussions. Although it is a two-seater, it is perfect for intimate one-on-one conversations.

The Touch of drama

This three-seater black leather sofa is located in studio 2, which is the largest at Chill where the majority of Plus workshops and staged workshops are held. The couch makes a dramatic statement as it covered in dents that gives its unique look to remember. The dramatic style leds itself well to the programs that occur in this room, such as Chill on stage and chill moves all assisting the chilies to bring out their creative side. The three-seater couch makes for excellent group discussions as well as more one-on-one interactions.

Each couch together with the space has its own way on creating environments that always people to come together and create amazing conversations. It is makes it hard to pick my favourite. Wii - Sports is a game that I’ve been playing for at least 10 years. It never gets old.

From the beginning, I need to select my avatar. Creating my avatar makes me feel more emerged in the game that I am playing. I have made avatars for me and my family.

There are three different categories in Wii-Sports such as Training, Wii-Fitness and Wii-Sports. I like the different categories because I might play Wii-Sports when I am with my friends or family. But I could also do Wii-Training or Wii-Fitness if I wanted to play by myself.

The 3 different categories in the game are very flexible. So, you can choose depending on who is home, which makes it a great activity for the whole family. Playing Wii-Sports indoors on a rainy day is so much fun, because we can still use more energy when we are all stuck in the house.

Since I started playing Wii-Sports for the first-time, it made me feel a bit puzzled. It took me 4 years of reading the instructions on how to play sports to make me feel competent.

Right now, I feel excited, full of energy and I always find it a little bit challenging by myself.

I had lots of fun playing Wii-Sports in my spare time.

I think someone else would like a try if they want to.

Until next time, smash it out!!!!!!

MUST WATCH CHRISTMAS MOVIES

By Tyler

With the holiday season approaching, I wanted to compile a list of Christmas movies that I feel will not only help us get into the spirit of Christmas, but will also provide a great opportunity to any of those looking to either catch up on some films they’ve been meaning to watch but never got around to, those who are looking for new films to discover and enjoy, or those who just want to be reminded of the classics they already love and cherish. The list will feature films of a variety of genres and different mediums and art forms, but ultimately each film will share in very similar themes and conventions all relating to Christmas. This will primarily be listed in terms of what I consider to be a priority in watching, but also taking into consideration the overall quality of the film and it’s relevance with the themes and spirit of Christmas, going from lowest to highest.

Home Alone (1990)

Starting the list off with a very conventional pick that I expect most people have seen by now, Home Alone has undoubtedly cemented itself as a Christmas classic. The film depicts a young boy named Kevin McCallister accidentally being left behind by his family when they go on a Christmas vacation to Paris, and must now defend his suburban home from a pair of robbers. A very endearing comedy with a great cast and wonderful score, Home Alone is a film that I can’t stop myself from recommending to everyone for this holiday season.

Black Christmas (1974)

Going on from a very conventional pick to a film that most reading may have never heard of and probably wouldn’t consider it their kind of flick, Black Christmas is a slasher film set during the Christmas season about a group of sorority sisters who receive threatening phone calls from a deranged killer who stalks and murders them one by one. A very dark and unsettling film for mature audiences, this is one that I recommend to those who are looking for something this season that isn’t so typical of what we’ve come to expect but nevertheless an absolute thrill that has already been established by many as a holiday tradition and a Christmas classic. I also need to stress that this is the 1974 original I am recommending, not the 2006 or 2019 remakes.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)

This is one that most have probably been made aware of but haven’t actually seen for themselves, How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a television special based upon the Dr Seuss classic from 1957. The story is virtually the same timeless tale we’re all bound to know at this point, the story revolves around The Grinch, a green humanoid creature that detests the Christmas holiday and spirit, and decides to take it away from all the townsfolk in Whoville. Not to be mistaken for the Jim Carrey film in 2000, this is the original cartoon that, whilst very short, is very much a Christmas staple that must be seen.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

This is a film similar to Black Christmas in that it is both a great Christmas film as well as a great Halloween film, as both films fit conventions of both holidays. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a stop-motion animated dark fantasy musical about Jack Skellington, also known as the “Pumpkin King of Halloween Town”, who after growing bored of the traditions of Halloween gets introduced to Christmas and plans to take over the holiday for himself. A tremendous marvel for the eyes with its impressive visuals and stop-motion techniques, exceptional scoring and a soundtrack that can be listened to again and again, this film is sure to be a wicked treat.

Klaus (2019)

This is my absolute top pick for a Christmas movie to watch this holiday season. Without a doubt one of the most stunningly beautiful animated movies ever made thanks to its impressive visuals and animation techniques, Klaus is a film that is sure to become a renowned Christmas classic amongst all the others. The film revolves around a lazy, spoiled and self-centred young man named Jesper Johansen, who is sent away to a distant town in the Far North called Smeerensburg, where he befriends a reclusive toymaker named Klaus and who together start a cascading effect that changes the town for the better. Beautiful visuals, excellent cast, wonderful score and a really emotional experience with various highs and lows, Klaus is a must watch for anyone looking to find a new holiday classic to fall in love with.

The Truly Unreal Adventures of Lucy

LUCY DON’T GET SQUASHED

By James

There was once a Lucy who ran into a brick wall because she felt like it. She laughed, she cried and she screamed for a whole minute. She quickly snapped out of all of these emotions and started walking in the street like nothing happened and began singing her favourite song “La la do la do do la la la la”. Along the way she high-fived a random stranger, “it is a day “said Lucy, as she looked to the sky. Then she saw something so out of the blue…a bus falling from the sky. She then screamed at the top of her lungs as the bus loomed closer and closer.

She lay down flat on the ground to avoid getting squashed, and then she crawled out from underneath the bus. “What the hell? A bus nearly killed me! My goodness it is a day…” said Lucy as she looked up to the sky again. A car starts to descend from the sky “What a strange phenomenon” she mutters, as she comprehends another vehicle falling from the sky. She runs towards a tunnel and more and more cars begin to fall from the sky, like it was raining cars.

Other people raced for cover under the tunnel. People were asking “What is happening outside?” There were now 30 people under the tunnel. The cars falling from the sky gradually stopped and Lucy decided to exit the tunnel. She sighed, “Ahh, it is a day” and glanced to the sky. All of a sudden, Lucy shouted with fear when she saw a massive yacht falling from the sky. She quickly jumped backwards into the tunnel. She found a wall to lie her back against until it blew over, “this is ridiculous!” Lucy shouted.

People in nearby houses were looking out as a bus fell on a house. “Get out!” someone yelled, and 3 more people ran toward the tunnel. The house got badly damaged. “Where do you come from? Is anyone dead out there” Lucy asked the people who were seeking protection from the bizarre circumstances of falling modes of transport. Someone was staying safe under a tree, in the blink of an eye, a car landed near the tree. “People are dead outside and crushed!” cried a woman in total panic. Hours went past. It is now nighttime, and the vehicles have stopped falling.

Now Lucy walked out slowly, and the others slowly followed behind. “Don’t get squashed by the falling vehicles!” yelled a woman. They are surrounded by cars and trucks and boats and yachts and buses. There was a car and a truck with very small space. “Crawl under the truck,” the woman said. Lucy heard but didn’t listen. Trying to squeeze through “I can fit” replied Lucy, and the others started to crawl under the truck.

The massive truck Lucy tried slipping through. In the small space she got stuck in between the car and the truck. She tried getting out sidewards but couldn’t. “Help!” she yelled.

College reunion party

By Lachlan

What had led to this? A group of 5 friends, Alex, Albert, Mathew, Andrew and Adrian, had organized a reunion college party at an abandoned house in the woods as part of a dare.

One of the friends, Andrew, had been found dead in the kitchen, brutally stabbed through the heart. All of them immediately began suspecting each other, as no-one wanted to be near a potential murderer.

Alex discovered the body and pointed his finger at Albert as Albert was jealous of Andrew’s achievements in college, which were rightfully his.

Albert suspected either an assisted suicide or suicide as Andrew wasn’t in a great place mentally or at home.

Mathew believed Adrian to be the culprit as they had gotten into a fight over a college award a few years back.

Adrian suspected Alex as those two were the people who got into fights the most.

“Keep it down will you?” A young woman said as she came down the stairs

“Who are you?” Alexasked, confused.

“Ruby, a wondering spirit detective, at your service.”

Blessed with endless knowledge, but cursed to solve murder cases forever, due to her knowledge.

“ I know the truth of this case.” She begins.

“The murderer who killed Andrew in cold blood is…both Adrian and Albert, the both of you plotted this together 5 years ago. The two of them worked together to plot his murder. Now then, I’m not going to say he deserved it, but seriously, how stupid are you?

Coming to an abandoned house in the middle of a forest?” Ruby continued.

“So what? Where’s the evidence? Where are the police?” They stammered.

“Evidence is right here.” Ruby got out a crystal ball and showed them exactly what happened. “As for the police, they won’t be needed.”

Ruby got out a huge book and Adrian and Albert’s souls got sucked in.

“You’re not going to hurt us, are you?” Alex and Mathew asked pleadingly.

“No. Just head out the front door and head East. That’s the way out.” Ruby said.

They did as she told them and before long, they found camp.

Back at the house, Ruby sighed.

“Turns out it wasn’t them. The people who killed me.” She said.
